We flew from Johannesburg to New York City for the FIFA World Cup final, even though neither of our teams made it. By your fifties, you stop asking whether a plan makes sense and start asking whether you’d regret missing it. It was also my husband’s birthday, so we booked this luxury hotel at short notice and hoped Times Square would behave itself.
This is an honest, experience-led hotel review, not sponsored fog. The Knickerbocker Hotel was beautiful, strangely silent and full of warm people. Its hairdryer, however, was a small appliance with enormous villain energy.
Key Takeaways
- The Knickerbocker Hotel has an exceptionally central Times Square location, with Broadway, Bryant Park, Grand Central and Fifth Avenue all within easy reach.
- Despite the noise and flashing lights outside, the room was remarkably quiet, with a comfortable king-size bed, effective air conditioning and excellent blackout blinds.
- Warm service, especially from Gania at breakfast, helped overcome a chilly check-in and made the stay feel personal.
- The hotel has lovely rooms, Diptyque toiletries, historic character and appealing facilities, although Wi-Fi, cleanliness and the hairdryer fell short of five-star expectations.
- The raw score was 8.3/10, and I would stay again after confirming breakfast, charges, extras and current room rates before booking.
Knickerbocker Hotel Location in Midtown Manhattan: The Best of Times Square Without the Noise
The Knickerbocker sits at 6 Times Square, on the south-east corner of West 42nd Street and Broadway, between Times Square and Bryant Park.
For a first visit, Broadway shows or a major event, it is gloriously central. Grand Central, Fifth Avenue, theatres and the nearest subway station are all within easy reach. For a Manhattan hotel in this price bracket, the address is exceptionally convenient.
Our arrival was less glorious. Coming from JFK, we emerged from the wrong subway exit, then construction work hid much of the hotel’s signage.
We tried a locked side door before finding the entrance, which felt like an unnecessarily sweaty urban treasure hunt.
If you’re arriving by underground, check the exit carefully and look for the main entrance before crossing the crowds. It should be straightforward, but construction made our route more confusing than expected.
Check-in did not help. The gentleman in the hotel lobby barely looked up while speaking to us, and I marked that moment down. Happily, it was the only chilly interaction of the stay.

Once we reached the room, Times Square vanished.
Our room felt remarkably close to one of the soundproof rooms, with a proper king size bed, good linen and effective air conditioning. The blackout blinds shut out almost all of the flashing light.
Outside, New York was shouting through a megaphone. Inside, I slept like I was staying several postcodes away.
The hotel’s official location details make its appeal clear, but the silence is the bit no map can explain.
Spacious Rooms, Diptyque Toiletries and One Terrible Hairdryer
Our room felt generous, tasteful and luxurious without putting on a tuxedo about it. The Wi-Fi was mostly good, though it became patchy at inconvenient moments. The bathroom was especially lovely, with Diptyque products at both the shower and basin among the thoughtful bathroom amenities.

Then there was the hairdryer. It folded in half, had no nozzle and produced more noise than useful air. For a luxury hotel listed by The Leading Hotels of the World, it was a baffling choice.
After torrential rain, I used it on my soaked socks. The hotel’s system mistook this for vaping and added a $500 charge. Reception removed it promptly once we explained, but drying socks briefly became our most expensive New York hobby.
Small practical details matter when you are trying to get ready for dinner without looking as though you have fought the Hudson River.
What Makes the Knickerbocker Hotel Feel Special, and Where It Falls Short
The building has proper New York history. John Jacob Astor IV opened the original hotel in 1906, and its Beaux Arts past gives it more personality than many polished luxury stays. You can read more about its early hotel history if, like me, you enjoy a grand old building with stories.
The modern appeal is less museum-like. St. Cloud has indoor and outdoor seating, city views and a wrap-around terrace overlooking Times Square. Downstairs, there is Charlie Palmer Steak, the Martini Lounge and Jake’s cafe and boulangerie. Guests also have access to an on-site fitness center.
Jet lag and football schedules defeated us, so I did not make it to the rooftop or Martini Lounge. The drinks menu includes cocktails and a dry martini, which makes the lounge another reason to return. The St. Cloud rooftop bar is open daily for cocktails and light bites, although opening times can change.
Food in this part of Manhattan is expensive, and rates are premium-priced, as you might expect from a five star hotel. Prices vary significantly by season, weekends, demand and major events such as the World Cup. Check the full rate, taxes, service charges and whether room service is available on your chosen rate before booking.

Warm Continental Breakfast Service and Thoughtful Birthday Details
The continental breakfast was pleasant, but Gania made it memorable. She greeted us warmly every morning and remembered us in a hotel busy enough to feel like its own small town. That level of hotel service is why I would recommend the Knickerbocker Hotel despite its weak first impression.
For birthday trips, the hotel website has offered pre-arrival room extras such as balloons, cake and chocolate-dipped strawberries. That is a lovely way to add ceremony without hiding decorations in your suitcase. Confirm current choices and prices before booking, because hotel extras change faster than New York weather.
Before booking, check whether your rate includes the continental breakfast. Breakfast isn’t automatically included, and the final price may also reflect taxes and service charges.

The Honest Scorecard for Sleep, Service, Value and Comfort
These numbers are a practical snapshot, not a substitute for the full story. I have kept the eight-point categories as they are and used the raw average, rather than rounding up to flatter the hotel.
| Bed & sleep quality | 9/10 | The bed was a proper king-size bed with good linene and despite the jetlag we had a great nights sleep. The 1 point was deducted becuase we used our own pillows. |
| Room cleanliness | 7/10 | Overall the room was clean and tidy. We did find someones purchase, propbably the previous guest, from H&M uder the couch which is why points have bee deducted. |
| Blackout curtains & air conditioning | 8/10 | despit being in Times Square, the blinds did a good job of bocking out the light, although not completely |
| Bathroom quality | 7/8 | Great products, a good sized bathroom and a lovely powerful shower. The hairdryer let it down |
| Wi-Fi speed & reliability | 6/8 | The wifi was a little patchy which was unexpected for a hotel in New York City |
| Location & neighbourhood | 8/8 | You cannot get more central than this. It I could score it higher I would |
| Facilities & amenities | 6/8 | Overall good amenities and facilities. The hairdryer was a shcoker and there was not tea or coffee station in the room. |
| Service | 9/10 | Despite the gentleman who checked us in, the rest of the staff were amazing. A special shout out to Gania who served us breakfast every morning adn Paolo at reception for arranging a slightly later check out. |
| Value for money | 8/8 | Very good sized room in the heart of Manhatten |
| The X-factor | 7/8 | The location |
The raw average is 8.3/10. The room lost cleanliness points for previous guests’ H&M purchases under the sofa. Gania lifted service to 9/10, while the location and unusual quiet did the heavy lifting elsewhere.

Our Knickerbocker Hotel review: A Stay I Would Repeat
For midlife travellers, this New York hotel offers a central accommodation base in Midtown Manhattan for a New York City break. During my stay, my room felt almost as quiet as soundproof rooms, with a comfortable king size bed and polished presentation. Its central location, quiet rooms and warm breakfast service make it a stay I would repeat.
